Back up your library
Before following any of these steps, it's a good idea to create a backup of your photo library, even if you use iCloud Photos. You can use Time Machine, use a third-party backup solution, or copy the library to an external drive. By default, your photo library is stored in the Pictures folder within your home folder.

This free Mac app is a product of Smartmontools Team. From the developer: Smartmontools is a package that contains two utility programs (smartctl and smartd) to control and monitor the storage systems using the Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology System (SMART) built into most modern ATA/SATA, SCSI/SAS and NVMe disks. One named 'Launch smartd.1.app' and the second 'Launch smartd.app'. The former, the compiled script I presume, insisted on launching Classic, which I do not have installed. The second, the uncompiled script I would guess, could be opened with Scripteditor and saved as an application from there. Smartctl -a disk0s3 for the full report where disk0s3 is the disks physical backing which can be found in Disk Utility.app by getting info on the drive. (There must be a way to find this under OS X at the command line.) Here is an example of the output. Smartctl on mac apps. Please try smartctl -d usbcypress or usbjmicron or usbsunplus under Linux or Windows (This won't work on Mac OS X because this driver does not provide real SCSI pass-through functionality). The OWC is a ProductID 0x0072, VendorID 0x0dc4.
